How to Create a Sacred Space for Meditation
Supporting your intention
There is something to be said for the ability to take out a clean handkerchief, spread it on the ground and have that be your meditation place. However, for most of us that is a little too austere. We find that putting aside a sacred space in our homes and adorning it with inspirational objects, a cushion, some incense, a statue or portrait, a flower or soft lighting really helps to draw us to the practice of meditation. It is simply being smart to encourage yourself in your own intention.
Creating sanctuary
Although there are not necessarily any rules at all, people find that quietness and tranquility and a pleasing space certainly are conducive to meditation. If we can "leave" our worldly cares for a short time, close the door, or draw the curtain, we create the all important intention to set aside this time for contemplation or practice. Maybe it has to be in the garden, under a tree, by a water feature to really escape the clutter of the house. Or maybe in your office, before your colleagues come to work. Whatever works for you.
Personal ritual
In such a secular world, small rituals can help: changing the flower, lighting the incense, fluffing the cushion, setting the timer, ringing the gong or bell. Then when we leave, arranging the shawl tidily, setting the cushion straight and intentionally leaving the room ready for the next session.
Taking time is the beginning - the space can evolve.
